LEADING OPINION :
A Normal Coronary Arteriogram Does Not Guarantee That the Coronary Arteries
Are Normal
01 OCT 2001
Periodontal disease may cause oral bacteria to
enter the bloodstream and trigger the liver to make proteins such as CRP that
inflame arteries and clot blood, which can lead to heart attacks.
TAKE CARE : TEETH INFECTIONS CAUSE NOT ONLY OSLER ( Infection of diseased
valves ) BUT ALSO HEART ATTACK !
Subjects who had one, two or several strains of microbes that cause
periodontal disease were more likely to have elevated levels of C-reactive
protein than those who had no strains of the microbes, which increase
Myocardial Infarction risk.
The American Heart Association Dietary
Guidelines Revised for the New Millennium :
Increased consumption of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains; implementing
an exercise program; replacing saturated fats with fish and nuts; and
limiting salt and alcohol intake.
A Balanced Diet:
1- lose weight,
2- fruits, vegetables, and grains are the most critical components in
promoting cardiovascular health.
People who eat generous amounts of fruits and vegetables are less prone to
heart disease, hypertension, and stroke.
3-fiber-rich foods curb the tendency to eat more than is necessary by
providing a feeling of fullness.
4-moderate amounts of alcohol may help prevent heart attack and stroke,
Possible link exists between excessive alcohol use and hypertension.
For diabetic patients, increasing fiber in their diets can help lower blood
sugar levels. Increase fiber intake through foods that contain unsaturated
fat (e.g., nuts and beans) rather than carbohydrates.
Persons with hypertension and diabetes are at risk for developing
cardiovascular and kidney disease; as many as half of patients on dialysis
die of myocardial infarction.
Dialysis patients should limit their intake of saturated fat and cholesterol
to reduce the risk of experiencing cardiovascular events and adopt
protein-rich diets to help maintain muscle mass.
The dietary requirements of older persons and youth are similar to those of
the general public. For children and teens, a diet low in saturated fat can
provide adequate nutrients for growth and development, contrary to prior
belief.
Ideal Body Weight
Weight loss and reduced sodium intake can decrease the risk for developing
congestive heart failure.
Persons with diabetes can improve insulin resistance with even a modest
weight loss through diet and exercise.
More Americans are overweight than ever before, and the problem is
increasing, even among children and teens.
Fat accumulations are associated with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and
hypertension.
Exercise is also important in maintaining ideal body weight.
Anyone who has not been exercising regularly should start slowly: walk for 30
to 45 minutes a few times a week, then gradually increase to 30 to 60 minutes
every day.
Cholesterol Levels
There is strong evidence that elevated low-density lipoprotein (LDL = bad)
cholesterol levels spell trouble for the cardiovascular system.
Saturated fat, especially in dairy products and meats, is a major culprit in
raising LDL cholesterol levels.
Trans-fatty acids also raise LDL cholesterol levels and are found in baked
goods, fried foods, fast foods, restaurant fare, margarine, and other
products made with hydrogenated fat.
One way to lower LDL cholesterol levels is to replace foods high in saturated
fat with those foods containing polyunsaturated fats (e.g., nuts, beans,
flaxseed oils). Eating oat products is also particularly useful in lowering
LDL cholesterol levels.
Studies have shown that eating shellfish and eggs does not significantly
affect LDL (= bad) cholesterol levels.
Along with nuts
Fish reduce the risk for a variety of cardiovascular events.
Increasing HDL cholesterol levels through dietary modifications can reduce
the risk for heart disease.
Low levels of HDL cholesterol are significantly associated with obesity,
sedentary lifestyle, and the consumption of sugar and processed foods.
Triglycerides buildup in blood plasma reduces HDL cholesterol levels and is a
risk factor for coronary artery disease.
Excessive intake of refined sugar, carbohydrates, and alcohol can increase
triglycerides levels.
Blood Pressure:
Red meat should be consumed in limited amounts.
Eat foods rich in potassium, magnesium, and calcium
Avoid salt
Eating fruits, vegetables, and whole grains that contain dietary antioxidants
(particularly b-carotene and vitamin E) has been shown to reduce the risk for
cardiovascular disease.
Strongly discourage the use of b-carotene supplements, which have been
associated with an increased incidence of cancer, particularly among smokers.
